Luggage isn’t something you think about every day. In fact the most common time for someone to expend energy thinking about their luggage is if it gets lost. Your bags are something that, if all goes well, you never think twice about.  That’s the sign of a quality piece of luggage, it doesn’t force you to think of it incessantly.

Of course, some people want to be noticed wherever they go, and there are flashy luggage items available to accommodate those tastes. You can find bags in neon colors so you’ll never have yours confused with the black bag next to it. Or if you’re just looking for a way to burn a little extra cash, you can get gem encrusted baggage for the cheap price of just a few million… depending on the stones of course.

For those that want luggage to be a little lower key, there’s a wider array of items available. One of the truly impressive things about the evolution of luggage is how many niches it has come to fill. You can get a specific type of bag for ties, or for your toiletries. You can get a piece of luggage that’s designed to withstand being run over by a car, or one that weights next to nothing. You may be able to use simple hand bags.

If you want to find a luggage discount, check the stores in the first quarter of the year, or in September and October. These times are when the travel industry is at its slowest, meaning that retailers will be more likely to discount their items. New lines of luggage also come out on a yearly basis, so designer stores need to move their old inventories. This can lead to great deals on otherwise insanely expensive luggage sets.

One thing that is on every traveler’s mind these days is weight. Airlines have been hit hard by the global recession, and prior to that they were hammered by the sky high (no pun intended) fuel costs that occurred during the housing bubble. In an effort to recoup the costs they incur in fuel, airlines have instigated baggage fees. These are typically $15 for the first bag, $25 for the second, and upwards of $100 for the third bag. But if you have a piece of luggage that weighs in at over 50 lbs, you’ll have to pay an extra fee for the weight. And the fee is not cheap, for instance Delta’s 51-70 lb bag fee is a whopping $90 for domestic travel, or $150 for international travel.

With these things in mind, travelers are more conscious than ever of how much their luggage weighs. New luggage comes out with an empty bag weight to assist you in planning how much you can pack into each bag before it will be tagged with an overweight fee.

If you want a truly magical evening, you can look up themed or gay friendly hotels which go the extra mile in customer service.
