Luggage

Luggage, it’s one of those things that you just don’t think about when everything is going right. How often is the average traveler thinking about their bags? When all is going smoothly they’re thinking about making their flight or connection, how to get to the hotel, or what their next sightseeing location is going to be. They’re not thinking about how much their bag weighs, or whether the leather exterior looks better than a woven fabric one. And really, that’s the sign of a good piece of luggage. It is functional, moderately stylish, but most importantly it does its job and doesn’t call undue attention to itself.

The idea of luggage has been around well… since shortly after we came up with the idea of ownership really. A cave man decided he liked a rock, or maybe a bone. Now he owned it, and he wanted to keep it. While meandering, this cave man stumbles upon a couple more fancy rocks that seem like they should belong to him. But now he has three rocks and two hands, and carrying the rocks around with him is getting cumbersome.

So, what does our ingenious ancestor do? He wraps the rocks in a large leaf and carries the leaf around in one hand. Voila, the first sack was just invented. Now granted, the first cave man that decided to “own” something probably also wasn’t fortunate enough to invent carrying the stuff he owned around in a container. But somewhere between living in caves and the hunter gatherer society, mankind had to make the mental leap that allowed them to create luggage. I mean it’s pretty absurd to think that a nomadic society existed without the capacity to carry their belongings in some sort of pack or case.

As the centuries passed, the concept of travel evolved and so too did the luggage. By the time of the carriage and the roads, travel chests were large, wooden affairs that a person could no longer comfortably carry around with them. But… they were ideal for storing several days’ worth of personal items for travelers, and they could easily be strapped to the top of a carriage. And that was the beginning of the modern idea of luggage as an item for travelers. As travel by train, and later by air became prevalent, the trunks gave way to train cases, and finally the modern idea of luggage, the suit case.

Today luggage has become quite a niche item. You can get garment bags to keep your suits or dresses from wrinkling.  You can get duffel bags for ease of use. You can get hard exterior suit cases that will protect whatever’s inside. You can get matching travel sets that combine bags from different backgrounds. You can get a small train case for your toiletries, or a huge suitcase that you could pack several weeks of clothing into. And those are just types of bags, that doesn’t touch on the colors and material choices that are available.
