Luggage discount

If you are one of the many Americans who’ve been hit hard by the recent economic downturn you are probably looking for ways to save some money. You may think you’ll need to scrap travel plans entirely, saving that dream vacation for another time. In reality there are many things you can do to cut costs on vacation. Things like flying coach or going with an airline that has a luggage discount can bring down your bill.

While at your destination there are other things that you can do to cut costs. You can stay at a less expensive resort. While the top of the line hotel may seem fun, the expense is oftentimes not worth it. Or, if you really want to stay at that nice hotel, try going elsewhere for dinner instead of ordering room service. Room service might seem fun, but it almost invariably costs more than even dining out on similar dishes would. It’s not a huge savings, but like an airline that offers a luggage discount, the little bits add up.

If you think room service or an airline luggage discount don’t matter, consider this hypothetical. Let’s say you’re going on a two week vacation. You opt not to take advantage of the aforementioned discounts. You pack 4 bags for yourself and your significant other. The airline charges you 15 bucks a pop for your bags, and an additional 15 if you have any that weigh over 50 lbs. let’s say one bag was over 50, that’s 5 charges, you’re already at 75 bucks.

Then you order room service. If you figure 10% over resort prices for the hotel to bring it to you, and then the fact that you’re tipping on top of that, it’s going to get ugly fast. At 50-100 dollars a dinner, and 20-40 for a lunch, you’re shooting about 95 bucks a day in food, throw the 10% on that for 14 days, and you’re out another 133 bucks. So between those two items you just spent 200 dollars more than you needed to. Unless you’re staying in a suite in a five star hotel, that was almost another night’s stay that you nickel and dimed away.
